I have these tools in a separate tool box in my office, along with a bunch of other special things. They aren't used very much, yet they serve an important part of certain types of repairs.
These are watch tools.
Many years ago I used tools like these nearly every day; changing batteries, resizing bracelets, repairing a misaligned clasp or a replacing a broken pin. And depending on the watch brand, the style, the type of band, a very different tool would be utilized. Sometimes several. It was (and still is) a delicate task so that the repair can be made without harming the watch (or any part of it).
But mostly the ones I have today simply sit in a box...waiting.
There are players every weekend that feel similarly. Football teams have lots of players doing all kinds of jobs. A few have very specific tasks. Some games they are called on regularly. Other games (or even seasons) they sit and wait. Don't misunderstand. These players go through all the warm ups, the film sessions, the prep, the playbook memorizing, etc. until their number is called.
Jim Sorgi was Peyton Mannings back up quarterback for many seasons with the Colts. He didn't play much. But his position was critical. Jim sat with Peyton ever day in the same meetings, with the same playbook. He was prepared to step in at a moments notice (and he did). Jim had a good career, even winning a Super Bowl Ring...all because he was prepared and...
...ready.
St. Paul reminds us that some roles in the church are hidden, seemingly unimportant. Yet, they play a significant role in the whole work of the church. Ready for the moment called upon.
Many years ago I discovered my own role in the church beginning with a spiritual gift inventory (and a companion Sunday. School Class study). Those results still shape my ministry from day to day. Those spiritual gifts, remind me of my role in teh greater kingdom of God, and the specifics of every day work. I'm an encourager, a shepherd (pastor), teacher, and leader.
And although my role is very public, it is no more important than any other role in the church...
...including the ones that don't get much visibility.
Your role? is critical!
You are a specialty tool in the hand of God.
Be proud of that.
